Little fruit trees deliver big flavor

  • JFS
  • June 26, 2024

Think you don’t have room in your garden for fruit trees? Think again! Miniature peaches and nectarines deliver big flavor in small packages as they bear big crops of fruit on trees that mature to 4-6 ft. They’re perfectly suited for the deck or patio of gardeners who yearn for their own fresh-picked fruits but don’t think they have room for a fruit tree. A great fit for courtyards, patios and container culture, they can easily be pruned to even smaller sizes to suit your space.

In early spring, they do double duty as ornamentals when their bare branches burst forth with big, fragrant, bright pink flowers – eye candy for people and an early source of pollen and nectar for pollinators. Blooms are followed by lush green leaves, and then by small green fruits that soon appear and ripen to perfection. An extra bonus is bright fall colors of orange, red and gold.

Arctic Babe Nectarine

Bright pink blooms of early spring develop into delicious, juicy, white-fleshed fruits of summer. Self-fruitful, it requires 700 or fewer chilling hours. Perfectly suited for containers and small-space landscapes, this genetic dwarf cultivar was developed by the legendary Floyd Zaiger, a pioneering hybridizer and introducer of fruit and nut trees. This little gem delivers outsize beauty when it blooms bright pink in springtime and delivers loads of tasty fruit in summer. Performs best in Zones 5-9.

Nectar Babe Nectarine

Bite through the smooth, red-blushed orange skin of this freestone nectarine and discover sweet, juicy yellow flesh. A perfect balance of tangy and sugary flavors so good you’ll want another! Heavy bearing, its fruits ripen midseason on a tree that matures to about 5-6 ft. Low chilling requirement of about 400 hours makes it a good choice for warmer climates. Honey Babe or other peach or nectarine varieties are good pollinizers. Performs best in USDA Zones 6-9.

Garden Gold Miniature Peach

Showy pink flowers bloom later in spring, making this petite peach a great option for areas with late spring frosts.  More vigorous than is typical of miniature peaches, this delicious yellow freestone, ripens late, about two weeks after the popular and widely planted Elberta Peach. Self-fruitful, it requires 500 or less chilling hours and reaches about 5-6 ft. in height. Performs best in USDA Zones 6-9.

Garden Sun Miniature Peach

Showy pink blooms are followed by strappy green leaves and small green fruits that ripen late in the summer – a week after Elberta. This yellow freestone peach is sweet and mild, and low acid.  Self-fruitful, it requires 500 or less chilling hours. A good choice for container culture, it matures to about 4-5 ft.

Honey Babe Miniature Peach

Beneath its smooth, vibrant orange, red-blushed skin is juicy, tender flesh and perfect peach flavor. The freestone fruits of this heavy-bearing tree are sweet and juicy.  Growing to about 5-6 ft. in height, it requires about 400 chilling hours, making it a good choice for warmer climates ranging from USDA Zone 6-9. Partially self-fruitful, it is best planted with a compatible peach or nectarine pollinizer.

Pix Zee Peach

This petite fruit tree delivers big crops of large, firm, yellow, flavorful freestone peaches. Fruits ripen early–midseason to midseason. Orange skin is overlaid with a red blush. Chilling requirement of this self-fruitful peach is 400 hours or less. A vigorous grower as it reaches a mature height of about six feet, it can also be kept smaller via annual pruning. Either way, its compact size is perfect for container or courtyard culture. Performs best in USDA Zones 5-9.
