Heads Up!

  • JFS
  • February 7, 2025

Good things come in small packages, and the same can be said for flowering shrubs grown topiary-style. Grown as single-stem standards, these stunning tree-form shrubs bring beauty to eye level and lend a formal air to landscape plantings.

Our tree form hydrangeas feature strong stems and sturdy, upright branches that support bright waves of flowers that last through the summer and well into autumn. Flowers are a great addition to the cutting garden – long-lasting whether arranged in fresh bouquets or dried.

Grown as small trees, our hydrangeas are perfect for bringing a colorful vertical element to container plantings. Their diminutive size makes them a perfect choice for planting in courtyards, intimate gardens, small yards, beneath utility lines and in other restricted landscape spaces. Planted in rows, they are perfect for creating a formal entrance along a walkway, driveway or streetside parking strip. During the winter months, their sturdy stems provide a great framework for holiday lights.

Hardy through USDA Zone 3, these versatile plants prefer full or part sun and are comfortable in acid or alkaline soils. A bonus feature is their attractiveness to pollinators. According to Trees Bees Like Best, a list developed by University of Kentucky researchers, Hydrangea paniculata is a proven favorite of both native and introduced bees.

Limelight® Hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’

This ever-popular cultivar rises above other varieties with a delightful explosion of flowers that occurs in mid-summer. Continuously blooming lime green flowers are held upright on strong stems above rich green foliage. In an ever-changing color medley, these conical blooms mature to white and eventually to shades of pink and burgundy in autumn, presenting a medley of green, pink and burgundy tones. Height and spread is approximately 10’ x 7’.

Quick Fire™ Hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Bulk’ PP 16812

Unique for its color-changing blooms, this breakthrough cultivar, begins to flower a month prior to others of the species. Blooms change quickly from white to a rich pinkish-red, color that lasts through the summer months and deepens to dark rosy-pink in the fall. Reddish-orange fall color complements the pink autumn tones and extends its season of beauty. Flowers are produced on new wood, and their color is not affected by soil pH. Height and spread of this early-season bloomer are approximately 10’ x 8’.

Vanilla Strawberry™ Hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Renhy’

Creamy white blooms mature to pink and then strawberry red. As new flowers emerge, they join the more mature blooms to form a frothy blend of vanilla and strawberry red colors in late summer and early fall. Cone-shaped flower heads are excellent for fresh and dried arrangements. Hardy through USDA Zone 3, this cultivar grows to a height and spread of 10’ x 7’.

Berry White® Hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Renba’ PP 28509

The sturdy trunk and strong stems of these tree-form hydrangeas hold the large cone-shaped blooms upright as they deliver an ever-changing parade of color from mid-summer into fall. Flowers emerge white and gradually deepen to pink and then dark pink as they mature. For a tree that matures to a height and spread of 10’ x 8’, it packs a colorful, season-long punch!
